Over eating, binging or comfort-eating is often known in psychology as a compulsion or (orally) compulsive activity. When people are being a bit compulsive they are giving themselves a quick reward for something, getting an immediate satisfaction. Something sweet or satisfying creates an initial boost (e.g. chocolate) which is quickly followed by guilt ('I shouldn't have eaten that, I'm trying to lose weight'). This sets you up for a vicious cycle, battling with yourself all the time - sound familiar? Being a bit compulsive is actually a wonderful way of dealing with stress, giving yourself a treat once in a while, but isn't so good if you have ten biscuits instead of one.

Many people that I have treated for weight loss at my Cheltenham Hypnotherapy Clinic have also admitted to comfort eating because of emotional issues, and they have noticed eating more (or more junk food) when they are stressed, lonely, bored, tired, on shift work, upset or depressed.

So weight loss not surprisingly can be quite a battle between mind and body.
