Technically
known as
Emetophobia this is a phobia where the person
has on overwhelming and often obsessional
fear of being
sick or watching someone else be sick or vomit. It is sometimes
known as the 'vomit phobia'. People that suffer from the fear of
being sick are known as Emetophobics or Emetophobes. Emetophobes
tend to be on the lookout for anybody that is even slightly ill
in case they come into contact with germs and illness, trying to
make sure that there is no way that they can be sick. Emetophobia
can often rule the person's life, dominating their thoughts each
and every day. It can and often does turn into a major obsession.
As a professional
hypnotherapist
and psychotherapist in
Cheltenham
I have successfully treated
emetophobia
many times, and many people that previously had their lives completely
ruled by their fear of being sick are now out there enjoying their
lives fully...free from emetophobia and its symptoms.
| Some symptoms of Emetophobia
|
- A tremendous and uncontrollable fear of
being sick, fear of vomit, being sick in public or fear
of watching someone else vomit or be sick.
- Despite having what can only be described as an obsession
with the thought of being sick which is almost always
daily - emetophobes are rarely sick themselves
- Watching people closely to see if they
are ill, or show any signs of illness.
- Avoiding certain foods again to the point
of obsession just in case of vomiting
- Obsessing about germs and hygeine, particularly
in the kitchen but also around other people who are ill
or might be, watching for every cough or splutter in friends
and family.
- Hating or even avoiding public transport
in case others are sick.
- Feeling worried about becoming pregnant
because of 'morning sickness' and associated feelings.
- Hating hospitals
- Being particular about the expiry date
on food and chucking out food if it's even close to going
out of date
- Hating feeling 'out of control' generally
- Being quite 'obsessional' generally in life - often
emetophobics are absolutely fixated on their phobia and
it dominates their thoughts.

| Help for fear of being
sick - case history
"It
was a doctor who first told me about hypnotherapy. I had been
quite poorly for the last year and was losing quite a lot of
weight. I had started a new job which was quite stressful and
included shift work and my emtophobia started to rule my life.
I had never liked being sick from a little girl and would get
myself in such a state over it just the word would make me uncomfortable
but I just used to avoid it. I never drunk alcohol and was fussy
with what I ate and how much. I used to eat, sleep and work
normally and the feeling of being sick did often come up. My
emetophobia got a lot worse when I started a new job... I wasn’t
eating very well or sleeping and this used to naturally make
me feel sick.
I found Richard's Cheltenham Hypnotherapy Clinic website and
found it very helpful and arranged an appointment... within
the first meeting with Richard he explained my emetophobia so
clearly and used examples and I came away positive...he was
so easy to ask questions to and he set my mind at rest."
At the end of therapy: "I came
away and I just felt like I was free ...it felt so amazing I
was just so happy. Like a huge weight was lifted from my whole
body , I felt so positive...what can I say I feel completely
different now. I am just so happy and can’t wait to get
on with things I avoided because I was trying to avoid my phobia.
I would just like to thank Richard so much on changing my life,
its made such a difference. I will never forget it."

Getting rid of Emetophobia
"Richard, Last night I went to the theatre and for the first
time ever I sat without looking around me wondering if someone
was going to be sick. I went to the toilets in the interval
without putting my fingers in my ears. Next week I go on holiday
and for the first time ever I can look forward to it without
starting to panic about the flight and possibility of someone
being sick. I won’t need the valium before boarding the flight
to calm my nerves and won’t spend the entire flight looking
around me to see if anyone sitting by me looks pale, isn’t eating,
is drinking too much all of which would send me in to a panic
in case they were sick. After suffering for at least 34/35 years
I feel amazing!!!!!" Client e-mail |
