Emetophobia - treatment for the fear of being sick

Cheltenham Hypnotherapist specialising in treatment for emetophobia; fear of choking; fear of being sick; help for vomit phobia; seeing someone be sick; phobia of vomiting; can't stand being sick; constant fear of being sick around people; being sick in public; treatment for emetophobia; cure for emetophobia; treatment for being sick; help for emetophobia; emetophobic support; emetophobic help; emetophobic treatment clinicTechnically known as Emetophobia this is a phobia where the person has on overwhelming and often obsessional fear of being sick or watching someone else be sick or vomit. It is sometimes known as the 'vomit phobia'. People that suffer from the fear of being sick are known as Emetophobics or Emetophobes. Emetophobes tend to be on the lookout for anybody that is even slightly ill in case they come into contact with germs and illness, trying to make sure that there is no way that they can be sick. Emetophobia can often rule the person's life, dominating their thoughts each and every day. It can and often does turn into a major obsession.

As a professional hypnotherapist, THRIVE consultant and psychotherapist in Cheltenham I have successfully treated emetophobia many times and is considered by many to be an expert in this particular phobia, and many people that previously had their lives completely ruled by their fear of being sick are now out there enjoying their lives fully...free from emetophobia and its symptoms.

Some symptoms of Emetophobia
  • A tremendous and uncontrollable fear of being sick, fear of vomit, being sick in public or fear of watching someone else vomit or be sick.
  • Despite having what can only be described as an obsession with the thought of being sick which is almost always daily - emetophobes are rarely sick themselves
  • Watching people closely to see if they are ill, or show any signs of illness.
  • Avoiding certain foods again to the point of obsession just in case of vomiting
  • Obsessing about germs and hygeine, particularly in the kitchen but also around other people who are ill or might be, watching for every cough or splutter in friends and family.
  • Hating or even avoiding public transport in case others are sick.
  • Feeling worried about becoming pregnant because of 'morning sickness' and associated feelings.
  • Hating hospitals
  • Being particular about the expiry date on food and chucking out food if it's even close to going out of date
  • Hating feeling 'out of control' generally
  • Being quite 'obsessional' generally in life - often emetophobics are absolutely fixated on their phobia and it dominates their thoughts.

Help, advice and treatment for Emetophobia
The Thrive programme, a special type of treatment that is UNIQUE to our association, is fantastic at treating emetophobia, with exceptional results.

Some therapists or psychologists simply do not understand enough about emetophobia and how to treat it properly (many of my ex-emetophobic clients have been 'all round the houses' trying different therapies looking for a cure), for example...

Counselling may relieve some pressure and tension in the sufferers life, but the if the thinking styles and limiting beliefs causing it aren't dealt with then it is unlikely that the person will get over their emetophobia.

Medication may be prescribed to control the anxiety or feelings in the stomach. Some emetophobes self-medicate and buy different remedies to try and control the feelings.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), a popular choice for anxiety treatment especially within the NHS may help the emeotphobic to understand the symptoms a bit better, and feel a bit more in control, BUT if the emetophobic doesn't understand enough about HOW and WHY their symptoms are being maintained, then it is unlikely that diary-work and certain techniques will work long-term.

Rest assured though there IS an effective solution.
....

Treating emetophobia properly and effectively
The THRIVE programme, helps people to TRULY understand themselves, and their symptoms, and give them POWERFUL and EFFECTIVE techniques at overcoming the limiting beliefs and thinking styles that are MAINTAINING the emetophobia.

We CAN reduce your emeotphobia from a huge, powerful, pathological overwhelming fear.........to just a normal dislike of being sick, that everyone has. You won't look for it anymore....you won't think about it anymore....you will get on with your life.....

All emetophobics that I have treated have shared very similar thinking styles, and all of these need to be addressed to provide a long term solution:
  • Obsessive thinking
  • Black and white thinking (can do it; can't do it; avoiding the problem)
  • Hypervigilence - LOOKING for threatening signs morning, noon and night, keeping the emetophobe in a constant state of alertness (and stress!)
  • Catastrophic thinking, assuming the worst, looking at the worst case scenario
  • External locus of control

Wendy is now THRIVING (May 2012)

"A nurse, suffering with emetophobia would sound like a joke! Not when you are the one living through it….Every single thing, and every comment, at home or work, was filtered through my emetophobic glasses. There seemed no way out… life was exhausting.

That was until I came across the Thrive programme , and tentatively made contact with Richard Parsons. What a fantastic decision I made !…

I couldn’t have asked for a more helpful and compassionate response, at a time when my self -esteem was low, leaving me feeling very vulnerable.

Usually I do not enjoy being in “the patient” role, but Richards’ relaxed cheerful style was more akin to chatting to a (very knowledgeable) friend in lovely comfortable surroundings. Our sessions combined insight into how to first understand and then manage my thinking style; with many random thoughts and questions from me.

I found it amazingly easy to talk to Richard, and will always remember his genuine concern, and desire to help his clients. The only way he could maintain this is because he truly loves his work.

I enjoyed every session, finding all the new information fascinating, and left every one motivated and enthusiastic, and smiling! (Yes… smiling whilst dealing with emetophobia!!). Before long I realised that I was challenging all areas of my life; and my internal locus of control and self- esteem were growing steadily.

Now, 3 months after meeting Richard I realise that “ this thing” of which I was so scared, does not actually exist, except in my thoughts; and as I now know how to manage my thinking…….. WOW!

I have been delaying writing this letter until I “KNOW” that I can cope, but have realised of course that that is just another limiting belief… so have decided not to delay!"
